Cardinals Turn Back Washington, 8-6
|
The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals, 8-6, at Busch Stadium. St. Louis catcher Alex Avila earned player of the game honors with an outstanding performance. He was 1-1 with a home run and 3 walks, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2. The win was Marcos Diplan's in relief. His record improves to 3-4. Bud Norris took the loss for Washington. St. Louis is now 59-91, Washington 79-71.
The Cardinals got a big at-bat from second baseman Ozzie Albies. For the game, Albies was 3 for 4 with 3 singles and a walk. In the bottom of the sixth, with runners on 2nd and 3rd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 187th hit of the season gave St. Louis a 6-5 lead.
"We'll savor this win," Avila told the St. Louis Times, "then get ready for the next game."
