|
The New York Yankees had to overcome a big game from Texas center fielder Jake Smolinski to leave Yankee Stadium with a 5-2 victory. Smolinski went 2 for 3 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. The winner was New York reliever Edinson Volquez, now 2-2. The loser was Nick Goody. New York's record now stands at 62-54, placing them third in the American League East Division.
Had Ryan Braun not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 1st, Braun hit a run-scoring double. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Yankees.
"We did enough to win," said Braun.
